Yes, a cheap retail item can get the same job done (more or less), but if you really enjoy a hobby you will want the best sooner than later. Then there is just the fact that mechanical keyboards are no different than any other hobby. The reasons you listed are all very valid, and all things that can make a keyboard really stand out. Almost all of them combine popular features and looks from retail keyboards to create a totally unique, and often much better keyboard. It is never instant gratification and always takes quite a long time, which is half the fun for me. For me personally, I like the journey of the projects as a whole, from interest check/inception to the final product getting delivered. Personally, I've only ever bought customs from Group Buys. People all have their own reasons, and they are all as valid as the next persons.
